General

How do I buy RockyMounts?

You can either get them from one of our dealers or on this site. Please choose whichever suits your needs. We have 150 select dealers across the USA, so hopefully we have a dealer near you.

They are such a good deal, is there anything wrong with them?

Nope! Every products we make from the PitchFork, TieRod, Clutch, and Tandem Mount gets rave reviews and we do not make anything that is cheap or flimsy, that is not good for you or us. We do not have the distribution network of Thule® or Yakima®, so our products are not widely available. They are priced fairly so you are happy, and we can be proud of what we do.

How long has RockyMounts been in business?

Since 1995.

PitchFork

Will the PitchFork fit my Thule® or Yakima® crossbar?

Like a glove, that is why we made it.

Why is the PitchFork such a good deal?

We are all about supplying well engineered, stylish products and not robbing you blind, so it just goes with our whole program. No corners cut, period. Look at one side by side with any other fork mount, the decision is easy.

Does the PitchFork lock to the car?

Yes. If you buy one lock, it locks the quick release down, and covers the bolt heads so the rack cannot be removed from the car when in clamped closed. If you buy a second lock, you can lock the cover plate so you will not have to manually mock the quick release after you remove your bike.

Did you test the PitchFork?

Yes, we have a protocol for testing all of our products that includes road and laboratory testing. We own a “shake table” that torture tests the racks. We purchase it from a company that makes missile controls (imagine what a missile blasting off goes through?), and modified it for testing racks.

What is it made out of?

The front head is aluminum, the underbar plate is CrMo, the shaft of the quick release is stainless steel, the tray is aluminum and all the plastic bits are UV stable engineered nylons. Good stuff, nothing cheap. We use a combination of stainless steel and yellow zinc plated hardware depending on the demands of the fastener.

The tray looks very low profile, will it carry my mountain bike tire?

Yes. We designed them to be very fuel efficient and quiet, but they will carry up to a 2.7” mountain bike tire.

What kind of coating is on the aluminum trays?

The Black and Silver colors are anodized with a commercial coating that is used on window frames to prevent fading. The other colors are powder coated. We have refined our etching and cleaning process over the years, and our current finishes are UV stable, tough and durable.

Why don’t they come with locks?

Most people buy two, then the locks would be different. We sell them separately so you can match them.

Why would I buy it over a Thule® or Yakima® bike mount?

Thule® and Yakima® are great companies and offer good quality, diversified products. We focus on only a few, and it shows.

Euro PitchFork

How does it mount?

It comes with a plate that slides into the track on your crossbar and bolts down with a 4mm allen wrench. The rear hardware slides into a track on the bottom of the tray to adjust for various crossbar spreads (fits 16”-43” apart).

Does the Euro PitchFork lock to the car?

Yes. If you buy one lock, it locks the quick release down. If you buy a second lock, it locks the rack to the car.

TieRod

Will the TieRod fit my factory crossbar?

Like a glove, that is why we made it.

The strap that hold it onto the car look like rubber L?

Rest assured, they are stainless steel straps with a rubber “overmold” as to protect your crossbar and provide a good grip.

Did you test the TieRod?

Yes, we have a protocol for testing all of our products that includes road and laboratory testing. We own a “shake table” that torture tests the racks. We purchase it from a company that makes missile controls (imagine that a missile blasting off goes through?), and modified it for testing racks.

How does the TieRod lock?

If you buy one lock core, it locks the quick release down. If you buy a second lock core, it locks the cover plate on so it cannot be removed.

The tray looks very low profile, will it carry my mountain bike tire?

Yes. We designed them to be very fuel efficient, but they will carry up to a 2.7” mountain bike tire.

Why is the head of the TieRod wider than the PitchFork?

Factory crossbars are made from a thinner wall aluminum tubing. To properly distribute the loads onto the crossbar, we need to widen the head as to not deform the crossbar under load.

My crossbars are bowed, will the bike sit at an angle?

A little. When you mount the bike it can slope at a max of 5 degrees outboard. This will not affect the way the car handles or the solidity of the rack, it's purely cosmetic. We do not offer shims or other means to make it perpendicular if your crossbars are like this.

Why would I buy a TieRod over a Thule® Domestique or Yakima®ForkLift?

Thule® and Yakima® are great companies and offer good quality, diversified products. The TieRod offers an aluminum head instead of plastic, and RockyMounts was the first company to offer a fork mount for factory bars, we have been doing it the longest and best.

9mm Noose

Will the 9mm Noose fit my car?

It fits the elliptical shaped crossbars that come stock on many cars. It does not fit the Nissan Xterra, Pontiac Vibe (2004-2009), or Volkswagen Toureg. If you own one of these cars, you need the TieRod.

Why does the 9mm Noose have that big plate up front?

Factory installed crossbars are usually made from a thin wall aluminum. With a bike mounted, there are large loads transferred to this bar. This plate distributes the load over a broad area as to not deform the bar.

Will the 9mm Noose fit Thule ® and Yakima ® Bars?

Yes, it will. It is not specifically designed for this application. And although it doesn't look as nice it will fit and hold the bike just fine.

Does the 9mm Noose lock to the car?

No, it is bolted on and does not lock the bike to the car or the rack to the car.

Why is the TieRod more expensive?

The TieRod works with all bikes with disc brakes, the quick release can lock, and has a nicer appearance. They both hold the bike like a champ, but the TieRod fits more cars, is easier to load the bike, and looks cleaner.

Tandem Mount R4

Why is it so much cooler and less expensive than everybody else's?

We are all about supplying well engineered, stylish products and not robbing you blind, so it just goes with our whole program. No corners cut, period.

Will it also carry my single bike?

Yes, it is telescopic to accommodate bikes with wheelbases between 35” and 78”.

Will it carry my recumbent?

Yes, as long as the wheelbase is between 35” and 78”.

Will it fit my Thule® or Yakima® crossbar?

Yep, that is what we made it for. Our modular Bar Clips will fit either crossbar simply and cleanly.

How does it pivot?

We use a headset from out friends at CaneCreek and all the pivoting is like the headset on your bike.

Will it fit my factory crossbars?

No. Most factory crossbars are made of thin wall tubing and cannot support the additional loads applied by your tandem to the crossbars. It is a free world and you are entitled to jury rig it with adapters and god knows what, but do not come crying to us. We do not supply parts or advice for this, hint…hint…..hint.

Does it lock?

No, our Locking Quick Release does not lock on the R4. It comes with an over-sized 9mm QR, and we recommend the use of a cable lock for added security.

Is my car too tall?

Our pivoting axle is the lowest of the major brands, and your tandem wheelbase if fixed. Measure your Tandem from the end of the back tire to the fork dropouts. This distance must be at least 8" taller than the top of your crossbar for you to load the tandem on the ground. If not, The R4 will still work, but you will need to lift the bike on at one time.

Does it make noise?

No. The R4 is the only tandem mount that incorporates oval tubing, so it's quiet.

Why can't I just use a PitchFork or TieRod with a really long tray?

The front quick release must be elevated. If not, the front bottom bracket of your Tandem will hit the tray. Also, Tandem Mounts must have a burlier construction than their half bike cohorts.

Do I need the Offset Bracket?

On some vehicles, the front chain ring can hit the door or window of the car. The Offset Bracket allows the Tandem Mount to be positioned a little farther out for adequate clearance. There are too many variables between car, tandem and rack set-up to have a master list. If you have 5" of crossbar extending past your tower, you do not need it.

Clutch/Clutch SD

What is the Clutch made out of?

The body is aluminum and the quick release is CrMo on the 9mm Clutch, and Stainless Steel on the Locking Clutch and Clutch SD.

Is the Locking Clutch easier to use the 9mm Clutch?

Yes, it has a larger adjustment knob, and loading and unloading the bike is much faster.

Does the Clutch SD lock to the track system of my Nissan or Toyota truck?

No, however we use Torx bolts for added security.

Is the Clutch SD east to install?

Yes, the first one takes 5 minutes, the second will take you 30 seconds.

If I get locking Clutches or Clutch SDs, can the keys match?

Yes. If you get them from one or our dealers, ask them to match them. If you order from us, we will match them prior to shipment.

Will it work with Disc Brakes?

Yes, no problem.

Lock Cores

Will Thule or Yakima lock cores work with Rocky Mounts or vice versa?

No, sorry. Each manufacturers' lock cores are specific to their own brands.

Do the Lock Cores come out?

Yes.

Can I buy matching Lock Cores later?

Yep. One of our dealers can order them for you (just read the 3 digit code on the key) or when you need a specific core from us, just put that code in the message area when ordering locks or a product that includes a lock.

Does RockyMounts or any other manufacture insure my bike against theft?

No. Unfortunately, leaving a bike on top of a car is like leaving it parked outside the supermarket. Thieves are unfortunately a part of our world. If you want more security, loop a cable lock through the frame and under your crossbars as well.
